What is a port?

Created by Charley Downey, Modified on Fri, 22 Mar at 11:59 AM by Charley Downey

A port is a digital channel through which data can be sent and received. Each port is identified by a unique number, known as a port number, which helps differentiate traffic intended for different services or applications on a computer. Ports allow a single networked device, such as a server or a personal computer, to run multiple services simultaneously, each listening on its own specific port number.
